All About Sixth Grade

Welcome to Grade 6 – The Ancient Year of Study and Learning.

This year your child will be introduced to the Cradle of Civilizations in History, Religion, and Literature which are integrated – Quarter One: Cradle Civilizations, Quarter Two: Greece, Quarter Three: Pagan Rome, Quarter Four: Christian Rome.

In math we will use the Saxon Math textbook which builds mastery through daily practice of skills and concepts taught prior to each lesson.

We will use the Delta Science Modules which include: Simple Machines, Electromagnetism, Matter and Change.  We will use the Handbook of Nature Study, Anne Botsford Comstock which provides an observational and experimental approach to the study of nature from Creation designed by God. Additionally, I will provide Outdoor Classroom experiences based on classroom topics I have designed and found successful in my elementary school years as a teacher and lover/admirer of nature and creation.

Our Language Arts curriculum includes: Shurley Grammar: English Made Easy (Level 6)Learning System, Step Up to Writing, Maureen Anman, Spelling/Vocabulary Skills, Poetry Writing and Personal Journaling Skills. Latin – Wheelock’s Latin Textbooks (6th Edition), Frederic M. Wheelock edited by Richard LaFleur.

Note: History (Social Studies) and Reading are integrated.  Resources include a variety of recommended Reading Anthologies and novels.  Students are expected to maintain neatly prepared, up-to-date journals which display relevant information associated with classroom assignments and projects.

Sixth grade is all about excitement and I am very excited about our curriculum and I see it as a great opportunity to study and explore the Ancient Years of History based on God’s immutable truth.

Sincerely yours,

Mrs. Tarver-Smith
